Where does chain link make sense?
- Back and side yards where the goal is keeping a dog in, not privacy.
- Long property lines where cost per foot matters most.
- Vacant lots, storage yards and construction sites.
- Pool barriers, when the mesh is small enough or fitted with slats.
Galvanized or vinyl-coated?
Galvanized chain link is the budget option. Near the ocean and along salt-water canals, the zinc coating wears faster, so expect rust sooner than you would inland. Black or green vinyl-coated chain link adds a second layer of protection and blends into landscaping. Privacy slats can be added, but they turn an open fence into a solid one in a storm.
What does chain link cost?
As of October 2026, Angi lists chain link at about $8 to $40 per linear foot installed and HomeGuide at about $9 to $30. Vinyl coating, taller fabric, slats and gates raise the price.
What does the permit need?
Fort Lauderdale's fence checklist includes a chain link fence table to fill out with the permit, setting post sizes and footings by height. A signed and sealed survey is part of every fence application. In a front yard, a chain link fence must be set back from the property line under the city's zoning table; see how tall a fence can be.
Is chain link right for you?
Choose chain link if you want the lowest cost and do not need privacy. Choose aluminum for a similar open fence that looks dressier and will not rust.
