Which wood fence styles do you build?
- Board-on-board privacy, with overlapping boards so no gaps open as the wood dries.
- Shadowbox, with boards alternating sides so both neighbors see a finished face.
- Horizontal slat fences for modern homes.
- Low picket fences for front yards, within the city's height rules.
How is a code-compliant wood fence built in Broward?
Fort Lauderdale's permit checklist includes the Florida Building Code's prescriptive method for wood fences up to six feet. In short:
- Pressure-treated 4x4 posts, spaced as the code's fence section allows.
- Posts set 2 feet deep in a 10-inch-diameter concrete footing.
- At least three 2x4 pressure-treated rails.
- Lumber graded No. 2 or better and corrosion-resistant fasteners.
A taller fence, or one built another way, needs a design by a licensed architect or engineer.
How much does a wood fence cost?
As of October 2026, Angi lists wood fencing at about $10 to $45 per linear foot installed and HomeGuide at about $20 to $50. In Fort Lauderdale most wood fences are 6-foot privacy fences, which land in the middle to upper part of those ranges. Removing an old fence adds roughly $10 to $20 per foot, per HomeGuide.
How long will it last here?
Wood has a harder life in South Florida than in dry climates. Constant humidity, sprinklers, summer storms and termites all work on it. Keeping boards off the soil, sealing the fence and fixing loose boards early buys years. If you never want to maintain a fence, look at vinyl.
